On July 20, 1944, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg planted a bomb in Wolf's Lair, the FΓΌhrer's Eastern Front headquarters. The bomb exploded but Hitler survived. What is rarely discussed: the mess hall's timing was changed that morning. Colonel Heinz Brandt, who would die in the blast, had been assigned a seat at the last minute β replacing a colonel who was moved because his chair was uncomfortable. Brandt died in the hospital, asking for his glasses. Stauffenberg's adjutant, Werner von Haehling, was in the building and witnessed the blast. He was later photographed standing near the shattered conference room window, and his testimony is one of the few accounts from inside the room. He survived the war and lived until 2010, giving his last interview at age 92.
