During the Battle of Stalingrad, a Soviet platoon led by Sergeant Yakov Pavlov fortified a four-story apartment building that became known as Pavlov's House. The building wasn't strategically important — it just happened to be the first intact structure that offered cover. What made it legendary was the defenders: 25 men held it for 60 days against waves of German assaults. They used no fixed artillery — only mortars from across the Volga. The Germans called it "the fortress." What's rarely mentioned is that the building had its own water well, which the defenders used to cook porridge and make tea during the siege, while German infantry outside had to melt snow. The well became a small morale miracle — a symbol that they could outlast the Germans. Pavlov survived the war and lived until 1981.
