The Japanese Admiral Who Saved 3,000 Allied POWs

📅 1945-08-00 📍 Rabaul, Papua New Guinea ★ Rarity: 10/10 🌴 Pacific Theater

When Vice Admiral ChΕ«ichi Nagumo β€” the same admiral who attacked Pearl Harbor β€” discovered in August 1945 that his forces were ordered to execute 3,000 Allied POWs rather than transport them to Japan, he refused. He falsified records to claim the POWs had been "accidentally" liberated by a naval maneuver. He arranged for the POWs to be held at a camp in Rabaul until they could be handed over to Australian forces. The order had come directly from Tokyo. Nagumo was later removed from command and replaced with a more compliant officer. He died aboard a Japanese cruiser in 1946 during the repatriation voyage home. His refusal to follow the execution order was not discovered until 1991, when his personal diary β€” found in a sealed storage facility in Yokohama β€” was donated to the US Naval Institute.
